Farm Life is Never Dull

We have now lost 4 of our meat birds with a 5th rehabilitating in the barn.  An animal was digging under the chicken tractor at night.  A few days ago, we had two separate fox sightings, one which was only a road over from the house.  The culprit was named.

However…

This evening, Eric exclaimed that a dog was outside in the yard chasing the chickens.  Teresa ran out the door just as Eric was yelling, “It’s not a dog, it’s a coyote!”  The coyote was running back towards the barn, with none other than our friendly meat bird from last year, Miss Lady, in his mouth!  Teresa (in her slippers) ran like mad, chasing the coyote up the road.  Feeling rather helpless, as she had previously chased a fox years ago, she persisted in her chase, growling at the beast.  Suddenly the coyote dropped Miss Lady mid run, who stood up, ruffled her feathers and started running back down the road.  The coyote disappeared up the neighbor’s driveway.  We couldn’t believe it…Miss Lady was alive and well!

Either Miss Lady was too heavy to carry (after all she is an overgrown meat bird),

OR

Teresa is a bad ass chicken superhero in slippers.

(We like to think it’s the second option)

Long Trail - section #6 (12.1 miles)

When the kids are away, the parents will play (or in our case, finally get another section hike completed).  We had a very wet trail today following all the rain.  The butterflies were out by the dozens though!

Gotcha Day - Year #2

We spent Gotcha Day this year at Santa’s Village in Jerrferson, NH.  The boys had a great time and unanimously loved the antique cars and bumper cars…is anyone surprised?!?

Simba

As though we don’t already have enough animals…little Simba joined us a few weeks ago.  Harvey is tolerating the new addition and the boys adore him!

Teresa always wanted a tiger kitty.

Eric is realizing he actually likes cats (all cats).

Sleeping mid-play😂

Cardigan Mountain

We hiked the 1.6 miles trail up to Cardigan Mountain with the boys.  Everyone made it and Terry even carried our bag of water and food and stayed well ahead of the rest of us! It was a fun trip of adventures and we managed not to get blown off the top.

Gotcha Day! - A Year in Review

Time certainly does fly. I sit here tonight, reflecting on this past year.

Exactly 365 days ago, around this time, we were just exiting immigration at Boston International airport. We had left Florida that morning as a family of 2...

...and arrived home from Haiti as a family of 5, with our 3 little men in tow.

Here we are one year later celebrating our first "Gotcha Day!"
The boys have all grown about 3 inches.  They continue to amaze us with their intelligence, crack us up with their goofiness and drive us insane (as all kids are required to do to their parents).

We've certainly had happy moments of celebration, but joy cannot fully be appreciated without the moments of sorrow.  In January, we said goodbye to our dear Piper.  Our "little monster" will always be remembered for her never-ending love for all baby creatures and her immense love of food.  She died holding her bone in her mouth, a feat our vet said she's never seen in her 20+ years of work. It was beautiful to witness her companions loving her, even after she passed.

Amidst the loss, we've continued expanding the farm with lots of new life.  We now host our 6 laying hens, 30 meat birds, 2 cows (Oakley and Acorn), 11 goats (5 bucklings and 1 doeling born within the past month - whom the boys all named after Star Wars characters), 17 rabbits (Clover, Bluebell and Hazel along with 14 babies - our new meat rabbit adventure), and a tank full of tadpoles the boys collected at a river.

This journey will certainly never get boring!

Baby Racoons

Teresa was hiking up the road with the dogs and heard "peeping" sounds coming from the woods.  She saw 3 baby raccoons scurrying up a nearby tree.
After taking the dogs home, she immediately ran back with the camera to try and photograph the little coons, only to find them in a different tree.  They had rearranged themselves from a circle to a line.
